Honeymoon or anniversary
Maui or Kauai: quieter coasts, sunrise on Haleakala, the drive to Hana, gardens on Kauai.
Kids under eight
Oahu (Ko Olina) or Maui (Wailea, Kaanapali): calm lagoons, pools, a kitchen, short drives.
Second or third visit
Kauai or the Big Island: fewer people, more landscape, a slower week.
One island for a week. Two for ten nights or more.

04 — The travel day
Getting there from Columbus

The flight
There is no nonstop. Every routing is one stop through a West Coast or Texas hub; plan on twelve to fifteen hours door to door.

The time change
Hawaii is six hours behind Ohio and doesn't change clocks. Day one is for the pool, not the itinerary.

The way home
The return is almost always an overnight flight. I plan the last day and the first day back so it doesn't cost you a week.

When to go
Late December and mid-June through July are the expensive weeks. September and October are the value window. Whales are in the channel from December to March. Since 2026, Hawaii's lodging taxes run close to a fifth of the room rate — budgets on my proposals include it, so the number you see is the number you pay.

A note on Maui
Maui is open and asking for thoughtful visitors: legal lodging, respect for the areas still recovering, and money spent with the businesses that stayed. I'll route your days accordingly.
